Robert De Niro’s art dealer sentenced to 6 years for selling paintings behind his back

HollywoodNews.com: A high-society conman is facing up to 18 years in jail for pocketing more than $100m worth of art from clients including Robert De Niro and John McEnroe, according to reports. New York art dealer Lawrence Salander, 61, will reportedly face at least six years in jail for selling exclusive art works and keeping the cash himself. Acting legend De Niro had entrusted Salander to be the sole dealer of the works of his father, noted painter Robert De Niro Sr, but instead he sold them – without the ‘Taxi Driver’ star’s permission – for a bargain-basement $77,000 and kept the money for himself. The celebrity art dealer, who was godfather to one of McEnroe’s seven children, also reportedly cheated the tennis ace out of $2m. Salander, who pleaded guilty to 28 counts of grand larceny, sobbed in court: “I’ve lost my life, my business and my reputation. My wife, Julie, who I love, and who I hope still loves me, has decided to separate from me. I’m utterly and completely disgraced.” New York State Supreme Court Justice Michael Obus sentenced Salander to at least six years in prison and ordered him to pay $120m to his victims as part of his plea deal, according to reports.
